Assamese is an Indo-Aryan language spoken primarily in the northeastern Indian state of Assam, and also spoken by a significant number of people in the neighboring states of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Meghalaya. It is written in the Assamese script, which is unique to the language and has a rich literary tradition, with a history dating back to the 13th century. It has a complex grammatical structure and a vocabulary that has been influenced by various other languages such as Sanskrit, Prakrit, and Bengali.

Assamese is also widely spoken in the Assamese diaspora around the world, particularly in the United Kingdom, United States and Canada. It is the official language of the state of Assam and one of the scheduled languages of India.
