The steps for CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) for adults are:
- Check the scene: Make sure it is safe for you to approach the person in need of CPR. Look for any hazards, such as broken glass or power lines, and remove them if possible.
- Check for responsiveness: Shake the person’s shoulder and shout, “Are you okay?” to see if they respond. If they do not respond, call for emergency medical services (EMS) immediately.
- Open the airway: Tilt the person’s head back and lift their chin to open their airway.
- Check for breathing: Look, listen, and feel for breathing by placing your ear over the person’s mouth and nose. If they are not breathing, proceed with CPR.
- Begin chest compressions: Place the heel of one hand on the center of the person’s chest, between the nipples. Place your other hand on top and interlock your fingers. Press down on the chest about 2 inches at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute.
- Give rescue breaths: Pinch the person’s nose closed, tilt their head back, and give two breaths, each lasting about one second. Watch for the chest to rise with each breath.
- Continue cycles of compressions and breaths: Continue the cycles of 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths until EMS arrives, an AED becomes available, or the person starts breathing on their own.
