International technology group ANDRITZ has secured a major contract from Tata Power to supply equipment for the 1,000 MW Bhivpuri pumped storage project (PSP) in Maharashtra, marking an important development in India’s clean energy infrastructure.
Under the agreement, ANDRITZ will deliver three advanced reversible pump turbines, motor-generators, and associated electromechanical equipment. The company’s responsibilities also include design, manufacturing, installation, testing, and commissioning of the complete units.
The contract is valued in the low three-digit million-euro range and will be included in ANDRITZ’s order intake for the first quarter of 2026.
The Bhivpuri pumped storage plant will play a crucial role in supporting Maharashtra’s rapidly expanding renewable energy capacity. Pumped storage systems act as large-scale energy storage solutions, storing electricity during periods of low demand and releasing it during peak demand to stabilize the grid.
As solar and wind power generation grows in India, such energy storage projects are becoming essential for maintaining grid reliability and ensuring consistent electricity supply. Once operational, the Bhivpuri project is expected to significantly strengthen grid stability and help integrate renewable energy into the power system.
The project also represents the first major pumped storage contract awarded by Tata Power to ANDRITZ, highlighting a new collaboration between the two companies. Currently, ANDRITZ is involved in seven pumped storage projects in India with a combined capacity of more than 11 GW, supporting the country’s transition toward low-carbon energy infrastructure.
