Ebara Secures World’s First Type Approval for Liquid Hydrogen Cargo Pumps, Accelerating the Maritime Energy Transition

In a monumental leap for the global clean energy sector, Ebara Corporation and Ebara Elliott Energy (EEE) have achieved a historic milestone: securing the world’s first Type Approval certification for liquid hydrogen (LH2) cargo pumps designed for maritime liquefied hydrogen carriers. This groundbreaking certification removes a major bottleneck in the emerging hydrogen shipping industry, paving the way for safer, faster, and more reliable global hydrogen transport.

A Paradigm Shift in Maritime Certification

Traditionally, maritime pump certification has relied on an “Individual Approval” process. This meant that every single manufactured pump had to be individually inspected and certified while already installed on board a vessel—a process that is time-consuming, costly, and fraught with operational risks.

Ebara’s new Type Approval fundamentally changes this paradigm. By validating the pump’s design, structural integrity, and performance in advance, the certification guarantees consistent manufacturing quality. This allows shipbuilders and maritime developers to procure pre-certified, ready-to-install equipment, drastically reducing technical risk and accelerating project timelines.

Pushing the Limits at -253°C

Achieving this milestone required pushing engineering boundaries. To earn the Type Approval, Ebara’s engineering team conducted extensive performance and durability testing using actual liquid hydrogen at extreme cryogenic temperatures of -253°C.

This rigorous validation was made possible by Ebara’s state-of-the-art, large-scale liquid hydrogen test facility at its Futtsu Plant in Japan. Historically, the industry has lacked the specialized infrastructure required for the structural certification of LH2 cargo pumps. Ebara’s facility successfully bridged this gap, enabling full-scale testing under authentic, real-world operating conditions.
