Role Summary
The Civil Engineer I is an entry-level professional engineering role responsible for performing basic civil engineering tasks and assisting with public works projects. This position serves as a training ground for new engineers who may have limited or no prior experience. Under the supervision of a higher-level engineer, the Civil Engineer I supports project coordination, reviews consultant and contractor submittals, and provides general assistance to contractors, developers, builders, citizens, and other departments. Work assignments require the application of fundamental engineering principles and involve oversight of construction activities at a general level.
The Civil Engineer II is a full journey-level engineering role responsible for independently performing the complete range of civil engineering duties. This position differs from the Civil Engineer I in the complexity and autonomy of assigned tasks. Employees in this classification receive minimal supervision and are expected to be fully knowledgeable about departmental policies and engineering practices. The Civil Engineer II manages a variety of engineering programs and projects, including land development, design standards, roadway improvements, traffic engineering, storm drainage, sanitary sewer systems, municipal facilities, grading and drainage, and private development review. This level requires strong proficiency in engineering principles, relevant software, and surveying tools.
This Civil Engineer classification encompasses a wide range of responsibilities across multiple engineering disciplines. Placement at the Civil Engineer I or II level depends on the candidate’s qualifications, skills, and experience.
