Job Summary
The Manual Machinist is responsible for setting up and operating a wide range of manual machine tools to manufacture and rework precision components made from specialized materials such as duplex and super duplex alloys, Hastelloy, and stainless steels. This role requires strong technical knowledge in machining practices, material characteristics, mechanical principles, and blueprint interpretation to ensure that high-quality parts are produced to exact tolerances.
Key Responsibilities
Operate manual machining equipment, including center lathes (300 mm chuck, 1.5 m bed length) and vertical Bridgeport-style milling machines equipped with rotary tables or dividing heads.
Perform routine machining tasks in accordance with established operational processes.
Support equipment reliability by assisting with routine maintenance and minor repairs.
Follow all health, safety, and environmental procedures to protect both personal and workplace wellbeing.
Ensure compliance with company standards, regulatory requirements, and quality procedures.
Utilize precision measuring tools—such as micrometers, dial indicators, and depth gauges—to verify part accuracy.
Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and geometric tolerances to guide machining work.
Communicate effectively with team members, sharing information in a respectful and professional manner.
Follow organizational policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with company objectives.
Perform additional duties as required.
Qualifications
Completion of a recognized apprenticeship with related technical education.
At least 5 years of post-apprenticeship machining experience in a manufacturing or repair environment, operating manual lathes and milling machines to produce tight-tolerance components.
Proficient working with both metric and imperial measurement systems.
Strong verbal communication skills for clear and effective information exchange.
Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks with guidance to meet operational goals.
Basic understanding and application of safe working practices and systems.
