Sikh Calendar
The Sikh calendar, also known as the Nanakshahi calendar, is a solar calendar system based on the tropical year. The Sikh calendar was introduced by Sikh scholar Pal Singh Purewal in 2003 and is used by the Sikh community around the world.
The Sikh calendar has 12 months, and each month is 30 or 31 days long. The first month of the Sikh calendar is called Chet and usually falls on March 14 in the Gregorian calendar.
The Sikh calendar is used to determine the dates of Sikh holidays and events, including the birth and death anniversaries of the ten Sikh Gurus. The most important Sikh holiday is Vaisakhi, which commemorates the establishment of the Khalsa, the Sikh brotherhood, by the tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. Vaisakhi is celebrated on April 13 or 14 in the Gregorian calendar.
The Sikh calendar is synchronized with the Gregorian calendar and has leap years every four years to ensure that the calendar stays aligned with the solar year. This means that the dates of Sikh holidays and events correspond to the same dates in the Gregorian calendar each year.
