Galling: Galling refers to the occurrence when two closely contacting moving parts seize and become bonded together, resulting in friction and potential damage.
Galvanic corrosion: Galvanic corrosion is the corrosion that arises due to electrolysis of the anodic metal when two metals from the galvanic series are connected in the presence of an electrolyte. For instance, if different stainless steel composites are used to manufacture various components in a pump, galvanic corrosion may occur.
Galvanic series: The galvanic series is a method of ordering metals based on their tendency to cause corrosion. Metals at the beginning of the series have a higher propensity to attack metals placed further down the list. The larger the separation between two metals in the series, the faster the corrosion will take place.
Garter spring: A garter spring is a long coiled spring with fused ends. It exerts radial force, either inward or outward, and is commonly used in shaft seals to maintain contact and provide sealing capability.
Gasket: A gasket is a deformable material placed between static components to create a seal and prevent leakage in mechanical systems.
Gauge pressure: Gauge pressure refers to the pressure measured on a dial gauge or digital pressure gauge. It indicates the pressure above atmospheric pressure and is typically expressed in units of PSIG (pounds per square inch gauge).
Gland: The gland is a component of a mechanical seal that attaches to the stuffing box, providing support and containment for the sealing elements.
Gland follower: In a mechanical seal, the gland follower is a part of the stuffing box that applies pressure against the packing rings to increase radial sealing force and ensure proper sealing performance.
Gland plate (or gland): The gland plate, also known as the gland, is a plate that connects the mechanical seal to the seal chamber or stuffing box, providing a mounting surface and maintaining the seal’s integrity.
Grease seal: A grease seal, also known as a lip seal, is a bearing seal that is spring-loaded and made of elastomeric material. However, for pump applications, face seals or labyrinth seals are generally preferred over grease seals due to their superior performance.
